If you’ve never visited Kentucky, Pewee Valley would be a pretty good place to start.
Sixteen miles east of Louisville, Pewee Valley still appears much as it did at the start of the twentieth century: a quiet village of well-bred estate homes in the Queen Anne and Colonial Revival styles, unpretentious stone church buildings and polite residential lanes more suited for strolling than driving. The Kentucky Confederate Home operated in there from 1902 to 1934.
To mark publication of my book, the folks of Pewee Valley have designated June 5 “My Old Confederate Home Day”, and they’ve planned a full day of historical events.
There will be a memorial service at the Confederate Cemetery, reenactors, cannon fire, a craft sale, a "Sweet Magnolia Luncheon" luncheon (served by the church ladies), tours of historic homes, a guided walking tour of the old Kentucky Confederate Home grounds, period costumes, dulcimer players and more small-town entertainment.
