After the Civil War, the federal government opened and operated volunteer soldiers’ homes for Union veterans. (No ex-Confederates need apply, of course.)
Prologue, the online magazine of the U. S. National Archives and Records Administration, published a succinct (but useful) article about these homes for disabled Union volunteer soldiers and how to access records relating to the homes.
